Product Manager

Product Management at VNN is holistic. This means a Product Manager owns the whole product, from the time it is conceived until the time it is replaced. While a Product Manager must collaborate effectively with other specialists in the company and respect their expertise, ultimately it is the Product Manager who will be called to account for the product’s success or failure in the market.

A Product Manager, while only one person, plays the key role in guiding the course of the product throughout its lifecycle, like a captain guides a ship, or like a conductor guides an orchestra. There are many individual activities and actors, each with specialized skills, but only one overriding purpose: to guide the product effort to market success and return on investment, while effectively championing that cause with multiple stakeholders.

A Product Manager must especially be able to answer the “What?” and “Why?” questions regarding a product:

  • What should the product be?
  • Why should the product be this and not that?
A Product Manager will be called upon to answer these “What?” and “Why?” questions throughout each phase

of the product lifecycle. Keeping teams aware of what we are building and why we are building it is essential. We have outlined seven phases that overlap in the process of bringing a product from initial concept to market success. A Product Manager is responsible for leading a product effort through each of these seven phases:

1. Discover

  2. Evaluate market needs, trends and competition that will expand or limit opportunity.
  3. Create a business case for an unknown product X that would return Y on investment Z.

2. Define

  1. Explore alternative product concepts vs. market needs, opportunities, and competition.
  2. Evaluate each product concept along multiple lines of value, fit, and return on investment.
  3. Select the best concept and Define the product requirements and success metrics.

3. Design

  1. Explore alternative Design expressions of the defined product (with the Design team).
  2. Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of the design alternatives toward achieving goals.
  3. Approve the design that best expresses the product identity and its market goals.

4. Develop

  1. Explore product architecture, platforms, and performance (with the Development team).
  2. Evaluate alternatives relative to market, product, and design goals (with Dev team).
  3. Approve the recommended path to Develop the product software and hardware.

5. Debug

  1. Create the acceptable quality metrics for the product (with the Quality Assurance team).
  2. Participate in functional and market acceptability testing to Debug the product.
  3. Approve the product quality achieved relative to market requirements (with QA team).

6. Describe

  1. Explore the best ways to Describe the product and its value to customers (w/ Marketing).
  2. Evaluate positioning, messaging, training, support, and launch plans (w/ Mktg/Sales/Ops).
  3. Approve positioning, messaging, training, support, and launch plans (w/ Mktg/Sales/Ops).

7. Deliver

  1. Participate with sales teams to Deliver the product to customers at meetings and events.
  2. Evaluate the product’s success for customers and partners (with Sales and Marketing).
